A few months in and we’re settling into the saving stage of the build process. Everything is locked in and surprisingly it isn’t that hard to save bulk amounts. In saying that I’ll be glad when it is just a mortgage we’re paying off and not everything else. Has anyone ever said they’ll be happy paying a mortgage before?
They took their time setting us up for the home saver account. I can understand they have a few people to deal with but their lack of urgency doesn’t fill me with confidence. That’s when it’s in their time – when they need something from us they need it yesterday. I should add I’m not concerned our house won’t be built, I just think they tell us a date (May 2018) to get it all moving and to make sure we save, when in reality the land settlement date could be months after.
This is of course good for us because we will have more time to save, and the more money we have stocked up the better, I’m just wondering whether there will be any little surprises. They say the settlement date won’t be earlier than that, it better not be, but it’s still all been pretty easy up til now so I’m waiting for the anvil to drop.
It doesn’t help when we’re constantly hearing news about it being so hard for buyers now, while we’re sitting here thinking …really? Is it all political agendas on display, or is there just some little disclaimer at the bottom of these stories that we’re missing? “This story refers to buying homes within 5km of the CBD, and does not include new builds in new estates half hour out”.
Anyway, in the meantime we’ll keep saving and hope that in the end we get the house we want without too many dramas. Fingers crossed.
Yesterday we went back for another meeting with the House people. They had found us a plot but it was slightly bigger so we thought it was just to confirm the new price and all that.
Turns out, while not a formal contract signing, we were doing a home review. So choosing the facade, colour schemes and any upgrades – so it was really moving fast.
For some reason, they had already given us an upgrade in the kitchen which is awesome (bigger stove top and oven, as well as stone top benches – about 5k in value). Now a lot of the features are included in the build package, but things like downlights, blinds, and a TV antennae point in the main bed we decided to add.
The agent was quite helpful in telling us what upgrades were over priced (eg. Air con) and even gave us half price on the downlights. No idea why we keep getting sweet deals but not going to complain.
After we chose everything he sent us to Cornerstone to put the initial deposit on the land. So it’s officially ours now. Now we just save the 5% deposit while it’s being built.
Everything does seem too easy so far. Everything I’ve read has suggested building a home is hard for younger people so I don’t know if we stumbled on something good or if we’re out of our depth. Hopefully Kristy knows what’s going on!
This time last year I was applying for jobs and being a part of the Centrelink machine. I had bugger all money, but I was happy living with Kristy, gaming while she was out working and playing the odd game of gridiron or basketball with friends.
Now, I’m interstate, employed (after 5+ years of job hunting – plenty of stories there), engaged and as of last night, in the property market.
I never expected to have a job, let alone be in the process of owning a house. I’m 28 years old, so it’s undoubtedly time, but at the pace life was progressing I didn’t see it coming.
Kristy is a big part of that. I tell her all the time she has no patience but it’s not only that, she has drive and passion, qualities I lack, so it’s great to have someone willing to push me.
So now, we’ve put an initial deposit to book a spot. The land hasn’t been divided yet but it will be in a new estate called Cornerstone in Werribee.
We checked out the area today and it looks like it has the potential to be a great area. It still hasnt really hit me but I’m sure the next year of saving will make me feel like a real adult.
